Course Description

The 2024 Teen Vocal Harmony summer class has several objectives:

  • To instill a love of harmony and a desire to have singing become a life-long hobby as well as have teaching music be seen as a possible career.
  • To have the students gain experience in singing, creating harmony, social interaction and music theory and to see forming ensembles on their own as a possibility.
  • To acquaint the students with several songs that relate to America, its folklore, regional geography and its patriotism. {e.g. America, America the Beautiful, God Bless America, Aura Lee, Bury Me Out on The Lone Prairie and School Days. As well as songs like I’ll Be Home for Christmas, Count Your Blessings and short but useful songs like Happy Birthday and For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow. Others might include What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve, I Love to Sing, and Auld Lang Syne.}
  • To supply the local school choir programs with student singers who have had additional experience and thereby increase participation in those programs over time.

The students will be taught their ‘parts’ to 4-part and 5-part arrangements of some well known early American songs, songs from movies, and patriotic songs with the possibility, depending on class size and makeup [boys/girls], of breaking up into trios and quartets. Audio (computer) ‘files’ will enable students to practice their parts at home as well. The class is open to students in grades 8 through 12, boys and girls. No former choir experience is required but is welcomed.

If you have any questions about the class please contact the instructor, Peter Hyland, at .
